William “Zev” Hack died

2011-08 Zev & Pearl Georgica BeachWe have been surrounded by a circle of family and friends from the moment my dad had a stroke, through his death, funeral and in the days we’ve been receiving guests since.  Each night members of our extended circle of family and friends have prepared beautiful dinners – particularly special ones for Rosh Hashana and Shabbat – and we’ve been joined by anywhere from 30 to over 100 family and friends to eat these meals and share stories.  One night my mom asked is it wrong to say we just had a lovely evening?  I told her, no, though we are mourning dad being gone – a grief that will continue to hit us in waves – we are blessed to be enclosed in such beautiful circles of healing love.

    Dear Nadine

I was going to respond to the message you sent to me regarding the words when I read the news about your Father’s passing, may he rest in peace.

My heart goes out to you and your entire family

I know the joy of having family and friends around when one very close to you passes away. You and I shared the same grief in 2011 It is family and friends who sustain us and we them.

My wife, Marla Gilson, fought a valient battle against a very rare Luekemia, one percent of all Luekemias. Ten months from Januaary 4, 2011 until October 29 when she made her last breath with me, our two chridren, her sister, my brother and his wife and her two best friends all present to say good by to her.

Her funeral drew 400 people to the Adas Israel Congragation for one who fought causes as she would say “in the Jewish Civil Service>”. Her burial in the Tuvin family plot in Baltimore was a bit smaller but again, family, friends and co-workers. Paul Sarbanes spoke beautifully at both places as I did also. My children Alex and Julia spoke beautifully about their Mother.

I missed your Fathers passing because it must have happened during her decline when my attention was directly focused on her, my children and the close friends who were with her during her illness. I know what a shock death can be.

Again, I wish you and your the best and as people keep telling me time heals. But we have the memories of years of fun and joy and that meas a great deal.

Please excuse the spelling and grammer.

    Love

    Carl

Izzy – Your grandfather Zev was a larger than life person and many who love you can share their stories about him. Talk to family members, starting with your dad and your siblings, about the time you spent each summer visiting Zev and Pearl: their memories may trigger yours or at least give you a sense of how amazing Zev was. All of us can contribute stories and pictures; some may even have video footage you can use.

Dear Glen – my dad died five+ years ago (Sept 27, 2011) & my mom died a year+ ago (Nov 14, 2015). I have such fond memories growing up in the same building with your grandparents Molly & Harry Spiritis and my grandparents Cina & Chaim Hack. We were blessed to have such a great inter-generational experience; as if the entire shtetl moved together from Bazaleya to Brooklyn! Warm wishes to you & your family, xo
