2012-0-31 Engagement hands holding earthFor decades I have worked with leaders from every sector helping them develop and execute strategies to better engage myriad stakeholders in order to achieve goals.  In the past decade, the explosion of social media has increased everyone’s inter-dependence and thus this work only has become more important.  So, now I’m asking you to engage in a different way: on social media platforms.  Please post comments on and/or links to my on-line articles, including two published by Huffington Post: Improving Stakeholder Engagement Increases Productivity, Profit and Sustainability (SRE); Engagement Leadership and Enhanced Relationships Fundamental to Sustaining Effective Business (EL); one published on THAP, The New Rules of Social Engagement and a series published on ReWiring Business.  I’m interested in your thoughts about what works (or doesn’t) in engaging stakeholders – internal, external or even adversarial.  And I will monitor Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, Stumbled Upon and other platforms to observe the traction of engagement ideas.  I welcome comments below too including links to your work.  Let’s engage!

    I’m in too!
Maybe we can create a Twitter chat and/or a Facebook groop on these subjects, so we can invite others to join in?

There’s a chapter in my book Punk Rock People Management on the topic – available for free via http://www.academy-of-rock.co.uk/Punk-Rock-HR

There’s also a blog on an academic conference I attended recently at http://humandynamics.wordpress.com/2012/04/23/lets-pretend-were-married-getting-engaged/

I love the idea, count me in as well. I will talk this up at my Multi-ethnic studies conference in Barcelona, June 13-16th. The topic this year will be on the increasing role of “new media”, especially social media. I will send you an email about an Oct. project in Doha and in Hong Kong that might interest you as well. All the best, Angela

Hey Nadine: thanks for the offer to engage. To create some context, we have 13 or so shared connections on LInked IN including, Arnold Timmerman (a fellow practitioner from the Journey developed by Brandon Bays), Carole Hyatt, Jodie Evans (who was on the board of Dads and Daughters, a non profit helping fathers be better dads to their daughters, a cause I deeply care about as a father) and Elyse Barbell (the former CEO of the Literacy Assistance Center, a client whose mission is to solve the crisis of adult literacy in the US).

There are many on line tool to connect people yet few of them create context and help us see the ecosystems in which we live and work. WE have created a Resource Mapping program which maps the people, organizations, markets, capital, knowledge, technology and communications that create our Resource Ecosystem. If you would like I can send you some more information and build yu a map.

thanks for the important work you are doing, my best, Mark

great blog Nadine, we’ve just met on Google plus and already developed an insight into each other’s work, in a few minutes and a couple of postings. It’s a small example of how interconnected we are becoming.

It can be complex and confusing for folk and as a counselling psychotherapist I help folk navigate this world more comfortably. Perversely all this engagement can leave some people feeling disconnected. I can help with that :)

Many folk in the helping professions similarly can feel a little overwhelmed with all this brave new engagement and again I can help there, navigating emotional blocks or technical phobias whilst remaining within the boundaries of legal/ethical requirements in regulated industries.

If folk are interested in my emotional support work or my business support please check out my site http://www.noelmcdermott.net

    regards

    Noel

Hi Nadine: Great to connect to you through your blog. WE are doing a lot of work in the area of engagement for a better way to run businesses. Sustainable businesses that help make our world sustainable need new forms of engagement. Many challenges stand in the way, not the least of which are older belief systems about scarcity, competition and control. Another is that most organizations have now process or designated team to discover new opportunities, evaluate them and launch the right ones to grow sustainably in any economy. Our new company the Opportunity Lab want to change the way business looks at opportunity and the resources that make more and better opportunities possible.

The Resource Map is a powerful tool that gets you to think about your resources in a very new way. By asking you to list all of the key resources and organize them into the categories of people, organizations, markets, capital, knowledge, technology and communications you are able to see you resources as an ecosystem or network and use them to find and implement new opportunities. This video will help you understand the process very clearly. http://youtu.be/HXF8L2h2LtM

The Resource Map is a core tool in the OppLab program. I have attached our brochure and a link to our 3 minute video under my signature below. If you would like us to build you a complimentary Resource Map, which we do for social enterprises and non profits, we would be happy to. Once we have our new site up, I will post a link on your blog. In the meantime I am happy to add to the conversation about new forms or engagement.

    My best, Mark

I am also interested in exploring engagement in its many forms. I’m learning how businesses can identify what topics (and methods) spark greater connection & response from their people.

For example, I recently read an article (by Ash Ambirge on problogger.net) which pointed out that a big mistake businesses often make is posting “about their business.”

She accurately states that customers don’t care about your business (or even “what you can do for them”) – they will engage with you when your content leaves them feeling better (with solutions, inspiration, or a sense of connection through understanding their issues).

She was discussing this in the context of blogging, and I am interested in experimenting with this in shorter posts.

    Danielle

PS – By the way, a very simple way for blogs to get “more social” is to use a floating social media share box such as “Social Share Elite” (a free Wordpress plugin) – that allows readers to syndicate any post to multiple channels by clicking a button. It can float to the left of a post, above, or below it.

PPS – I came across your article via your LinkedIn message – how’s that for social!

I think the power of social media is the ease of building a relationship strong enough to mandate a re-tweet, or post or share, very quickly with minimal interaction. Granted this is not the engagement of a stakeholder but it is sufficient to broadcast the message to any potential stakeholders in the new connections network

I will make the request to “Please help me share my friends Social Engagement = Business Profits message” with links to your various articles across several platforms http://www.xeeme.com/coachaustin.

    Hi Nadine,
Thank you for the invitation to write.

I am loving Social Media. It allows me, a solopreneur, to have a means of advertising with little or no cost other than the cost of my time, which I value. Social media is F-U-N! I get to play, share and experience myself with other people in a new and creative way. I am not inhibited by money nor convention.
Social Medial is spontaneous, explosive and most importantly creative…It ebbs and flows with life.

The more I touch in and explore what the model is about I find it is connective. For me this essential quality is FEMININE! It is what we do. We go in…root around…find something we like…and then share it with our circle of friends. It is an inner world bringing to the outer world process. Delicious for femmy gal like me.

In comparison the other side of media is Male in essence…Going out for the hunt ie..newspaper, tv, radio, and bring the kill(consumer) to the tribe for nourishment. It worked for it’s time and now is the time for Sharing our wisdom, joy, and beauty.
Move guys and make some time for Social sharing, events, and silly pics. Between all that you will find some real pearls.

    Thanks for listening.
May Peace Prevail where fear remains.
    Gayle

Hi Nadine, please check the below letter and contact me for the betterment of the coming generations

Sub: To have an emergency discussion with the heads of the European Union and the Indian government to forward an two point solution to the present crisis!

Ref: The forthcoming financial turmoil of the world!

Please note that there is a very simple solution to solve the present global financial crisis. Time being it will give greatest relief to the entire world, but printing and dumping money into the system, i mean to stock market, banking system and the corporate world by naming it as stimulus package or bailout will lead nowhere. It will accelerate the problem all over the world and generate an uncontrollable inflation for which all governments should take responsibility.

The solution that i intend to forward is very important and too urgent for all the governments from all over the world which have become panic, otherwise this month itself the entire world, including India will witness an unpredictable financial tsunami. Nature has revealed to me the two point solution to solve and shift the present financial crisis for the time being. Please go through the below message to know about me and the exact nature of the approaching financial disaster.

Sir, also note that from the state of panic no one can handle any given problem, including the present crisis. First, there is a need to give time for the world to breath, i mean to relax and the two point solution which i intend to propose will spiritually perform this task.

Please also note that in the month of January 2008, I have exactly predicted the first wave of economic collapse and also declared that it will occur exactly in the month of September 2008. This time also I said that the second wave of collapse will hit the grass root of the world economy exactly in the month of May 2012. So, please take this matter into your serious consideration and act at the earliest because there is no more time left for the world leaders to breath. Now, there is also an emergency need to build the all party economic cell to handle the uncontrollable situation that may lead anywhere.

Note: Avoiding the forthcoming economic collapse is not possible, but we can shift the crisis for the time being. Meanwhile, we can ask people to get ready to face the Truth. Now, there is a universal need to build ‘The Tension-free and Recession-free zone’ on earth for the betterment of coming generations. We are waiting with the scientifically revealed scripture to begin this greatest work after the final collapse of the system where the state, family and private property will be dissolved by nature to re-construct the world into the spiritual mould of the New Age.

    Coninue….

Glad to have you in our Five Star Bloggers group on LinkedIn – just one more fruitful way of driving interaction as opposed to just undirected traffic.

Social media is indeed a powerful connective force, especially potent if used intelligently and thoroughly. Writing this blog, in itself, is a fine way to engage with us. Thanks for reaching out!

Be sure to keep posting links in our group – I, for one, am always interested. And I’m sure others will be, too. And remember that the best way to draw attention to your own work is to pay attention to the work of others. What goes around comes around!

Keep these fine social media efforts up, and you’ll be on top of things in no time :)

Nadine, I agree with you and can add several points, .
    1. Belief. As you have to share it with your team and make them belief as well.
    2. Inspiration. First of all, to engage others leaders should be engaged and inspired themselves;
    3. Trust. To build trust – one should be transparent;
    4. Leadedship. You should be on forefront as Napoleon or Caesar and lead by example. Not always, but in most challenging cases. Nobody will be able to follow you in the field if you are in the office.
    5. Transparency. If you are not transparent you cheat yourself and others. And it is also difficult to transfer complex ideas. Tsar Peter I made a rule – nobody should speak from notes “to see all your foolishness”. This is important rule and I would suggest it for todays politicians and managers.
    4. Knowledge Transfer. It worth reading about “Tacit Knowledge” by Michael Polanyi. Tacit knowledge (as opposed to explicit knowledge) is the kind of knowledge that is difficult to transfer to another person by means of writing it down or verbalising it. According to by Polanyi – to transfer knowledge you should “indwell in subject”. Much tacit knowledge is passed on by non-explicit means, such as apprenticeship (observing a master, and then practicing under the master’s guidance).
    5. Coordination and colaboration. The best collaborative tool I know is Salesforce Chatter. You can watch GE and Virgine cases here http://www.youtube.com/dreamforce?elq_mid=581&elq_cid
    6. Care. You should care about your team. Richard Branson was speaking on Dreamforce about leadership styles. He does not fire his employees if they make mistakes. If necessary he finds for them other positions in the company.
    7. Fun. Business with fun is more that just business.

Nadine, I’d like to salute you with your blog, certainly the content of the articles proofs years of experience brought to fruit for the benefit of others.
There are some jewels worth pursuing and sharing, so I will come back a couple of times to look at your new articles.
One recommendation to make your articles flow. Though I use Twitter regularly, it does not provide the potential to follow-up on everyone 24/7. so I am still of the older generation, sticking to email. So besides the RSS feed maybe also enable an email based newsletter. For me and some of us that sticks better for follow-through.
Thanks and keep up the wonderful work.
    Joris
